Projects
This project chronicles the aftermath of centuries-long colonization and exploitation in Banda, a remote archipelago dotted the vast sea in eastern Indonesia. Comprised of ten small islands which rarely appear on most maps, Banda was the setting of some earliest European ventures in Asia and played an important role in global economic history. It was here too the English established their first colony overseas: an island named Rhun which later surrendered to the Dutch in exchange for Manhattan.
In the far-flung Indonesian archipelago, the last great passenger liner company in the world, Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia—better known by its acronym Pelni—bridges the nation like no other.
The iconic Italian Vespa by Piaggio has a special place in the heart of Indonesian motorists. The earliest version that can be seen on the street dates back to the 1960s, when the Indonesian peacekeeping mission in Africa returned to the country and was awarded Vespa bikes by the government. In many cities across the archipelago Vespa communities thrive. Although most of them adore classic Vespas, some feed their passion to the next level by transforming the originals into versions never imagined by Piaggio.
